Los Angeles, our Housing and Homeless Issues are Policy Decisions. Let Us Choose Different Policies!
There is a direct line from our exclusionary housing policies of the last 40 years to the chronic housing shortage and homelessness across our City.
What policy change can we literally make today that we already know works?
Call Mayor Bass now and demand that she immediately reinstate the original version of Executive Directive 1 (ED 1) to get LA building affordable housing through market mechanisms. The original ED 1 was so successful in cutting through all red tape and public objections that private developers were rushing to build affordable housing.
What additional policy changes must we demand to make it easy to build the 450,000 units of mixed income and affordable housing across the city?
Rezone single family lots to multi-family lots everywhere in the City
All by-right construction should have a 100% ministerial review
Remove the right to appeal planning department decisions to the City Council
When we start to Build! Build! Build! we will also kickstart the greatest jobs program in LA history. With the fees and tax revenue generated from all the new building, we can fully fund the City’s budget, including:
New programs to help people into housing
Mental healthcare
Drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs
Jobs programs
The problem has been created by policy decisions. The solutions can be found with new policies that are within our reach. Demand the Mayor and City Hall act now with a call or email or social media post on the Mayor’s and your council member’s social media.
