Why Socialism Destroys the Individual
Socialism—commonly understood as a flavor of Marxism, Leninism or Stalinism—destroys the individual and society because it fails to take into account human nature.
Socialism and Communism are two terms without much distinction. In Marxist theory, Socialism and Communism are functionally interchangeable words. Over time, the terms came to mean different stages of historical, societal and economic development.
Socialism is now popularly defined as a temporary post-Capitalist stage where the workers control the means of production, preceding and laying the groundwork for Communism, which in its final form abolishes private property and includes the central planning of the economy covering all production and consumption.
Finally, a Communist society also abolishes social classes, money, the nation state and religion.
Dig a little into Socialist and Communist doctrine and it quickly becomes clear that the individual human being is destroyed and made irrelevant in order to establish these truly fictional societies. (Thomas More’s fictional Utopia, published in 1516, could have reasonably been the end of taking Communism seriously.)
How, you might ask?
The answer is human nature. Humans, since the time we could fulfill our most basic needs have desired (wanted) more. What you desire will never be what I desire. What you desire and claim for yourself is your property. What I desire and claim for myself is my property.
I have no claim on your wants and you have no claim on my mine. Your property is yours and can never justly be taken from you.
If we lived in a fantastical world where the supernatural provided for every last need and want, there would be no ideas of property. If I had something you wanted and you took it from me, I would not care because I would simply replace it with great ease. In fact, there would be no concept of justice and property rights (there would still be justice around life and liberty in this magical garden).
Our very nature would be different.
However, we do not live in a fantastical world of make believe. We live in a world of relative scarcity, less so for our necessities, more so for our infinite wants.
I do not know what makes you tick. In fact, I do not care. Most likely, it is not what makes me tick. I do, however, care passionately that you are able to freely pursue what makes you tick. I demand the same in return.
Socialism as a thought experiment requires a different beast than humans. Socialist beasts must all feel the exact same tick in their breasts. And if that tick were to change in one, then the tick must simultaneously change in all.
We are not those beasts. We are humans. Each with different passions. Once you allow for different passions in the Socialism thought experiment, the whole artifice comes crashing down.
Socialism, along with free market Capitalism, destroys the individual. Neither are worthy methods to organize individual humans into a collective society. Act in your own self-interest and work to elect a government that will guarantee your individual rights to define your own purpose, pursue your own happiness and to live your live as you see fit without interference from the government or other groups.
The government that you elect to guarantee your individual rights will do so in part by also guaranteeing a commercial society that works for all of us by breaking monopolies, taxing excessive wealth and returning the excess to the workers who created it, and always maintaining fully competitive markets.
